Ok so its a pretty well known fact that southerner’s love to hunt and fish, after all we live in Sportsman’s Paradise. Sherburne Wildlife Management Area has it all. From boat dock to firearm/archery range to nature trails, there’s no stone left unturned. This place is amazing!!
Sherburne is about an hour drive from Baton Rouge. You will see the sign in the picture above when you reach the entrance.
- Entrance to the WMA
Above is the view you see as you drive into the wildlife management area (WMA).
- Permit and Map station
Definitely look for this stand. You must fill out one of the permits if you are planning to use the facilities and/or hunt. NOTE: Anyone entering a WMA for purposes other than Hunting or Fishing must possess one of the following: a valid Wild Louisiana Stamp, Hunting License, or Fishing License.
- Restrooms but no showers
Shortly after obtaining the permit, you will notice 2 things. The boat launch and the restrooms. The restrooms are very basic but serve their function.
- Boat ramp
The boat launch has room for two boats. This boat launch is relatively small, but don’t worry there is little to no traffic. The boat launch allows you to go further down the bayou and deeper into the WMA .
- Primitive camping
Above is the primitive camping area. Each appear to have a fire pit and picnic table. Continue down this gravel drive until you arrive at the outdoor ranges.
Sherburne WMA has 5 ranges.
Shotgun Range # 1:
Manual Throwers are installed for public use, bring your own clay targets and shells.
Shotgun Range # 2:
Skeet range (high & low house) with remote controlled throwers, bring your own clay targets and shells.
Field Targets 10 yds – 50 yds. & 3-D Targets with elevated shooting platform on site.
- 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 yard targets
- Archery stand
The picture above shows the archery stand and the 3D targets. The 3D targets at this time consist of a deer, boar, and black bear.
Handgun Range: 10, 25, & 50 yard lines, 20 shooting positions.
Rifle Range: 25, 50, & 100 yard lines, 12 benches.
- The rifle range
Bring you own targets, staple gun, safety glasses, and ear protection and abide by the rules of the range.
There is also a nature trail that can be used for hiking, walking, or jogging.
